40-year-old businessman arraigned over alleged N6.1m fraud

Streaming of high court proceedings widens judicial accountability

A 40-year-old businessman, Sanusi Garba, was on Wednesday arraigned before a Kaduna Chief Magistrates Court for an alleged N6.1m fraud.

The accused, a resident of Ungwan Sanusi, in Kaduna is standing trial on a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, breach of trust and fraud.

The Prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, told the court that one Aminu Abdulahi, reported the matter at the Gabasawa Police Station on July 2.

Leo said that the accused conspired with two others now at large, acted in a fraudulent manner and deceived the complainant into entrusting N6.1m to them sometime in September 2023.

He said that the money was for business purposes, but the accused and his accomplices misappropriated and converted it to their own use.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravened the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum, one of who must be a blood relation.

Emmanuel said that the sureties must be gainfully employed with evidence of two years tax payment to Kaduna State.

He adjourned the case until Aug. 29, for hearing.
