Nigeria has reaffirmed its leadership in African aviation with the re-election of Ms. Adefunke Adeyemi as Secretary General of the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC).
Her victory was confirmed during the 35th Ordinary Plenary Session held in Brazzaville, Congo, where she garnered 22 votes against seven, solidifying the confidence of AFCAC member states in her visionary leadership.
The Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, played a pivotal role in this achievement. Minister Keyamo spearheaded diplomatic efforts to rally support for Ms. Adeyemi’s candidacy, showcasing Nigeria’s commitment to shaping the future of aviation on the continent.
“This is not just a win for Nigeria but for the entire African aviation industry,” said Minister Keyamo after the election. “Ms. Adeyemi’s outstanding leadership and innovative vision have positioned AFCAC to deliver transformative progress across the continent. Nigeria remains committed to driving AFCAC’s goals and ensuring the realization of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM).”
The election process adhered to AFCAC’s Rules of Procedure for Plenary Meetings, with an Election Commission comprising representatives from various African Union regions ensuring transparency and fairness.
Nigeria’s strategic leadership within the West African bloc, under Minister Keyamo, was critical in securing widespread continental support.
AFCAC, the African Union’s specialized agency for civil aviation, oversees the implementation of the Yamassoukro Decision (YD) and the Single African Air Transport Market. With 37 member states united under SAATM, AFCAC aims to enhance the continent’s aviation competitiveness and connectivity.
Ms. Adeyemi’s tenure has been characterized by groundbreaking initiatives that promote integration, sustainability, and innovation in African aviation.
Her re-election signifies a mandate to further advance AFCAC’s objectives, ensuring a robust, unified, and competitive air transport system for Africa.
