According to Libyan sources, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) will announce its final decision on the botched Libya-Nigeria Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match this week.
Both parties had until Sunday, October 19, to submit their sides of the case. However, as reported by the Libya Al-Ahrar Channel, not only the failed match at Benina Stadium is under investigation.
The publication also suggests that the Libyan Football Federation (LFF) may have requested that the first-leg match, which Libya lost, be included in the investigation.
According to Libya Al-Ahrar Channel, the investigation “will include the events that accompanied both the first and second leg matches between the national teams of Libya and Nigeria in the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.”
The Libyan Federation submitted all relevant documents, with a specialized lawyer assigned by the federation to oversee the case with CAF.
It should be recalled that the Nigerian delegation for the botched match was held up for nearly 20 hours at an abandoned Labraq Airport, where their aircraft, already on descent, was dangerously diverted.
In its initial response, CAF removed the match from last Tuesday’s fixtures and issued a query to the Libyan FA, requesting an explanation of the events.
