Breaking: Mining Pit Collape Kills 3 In Niger

Days after a mining pit collapsed in a village in the Shiroro local government area of Niger State, killing at least 20 people and trapping other miners, another pit crashed, killing three people at Bazakwoi, a village in the Adnun community of the state.

One person was pulled out alive in the latest tragedy.

Director-General of Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Alhaji Abdullahi Baba-Arah, who confirmed the incident, said that no one was trapped in the pit. According to Baba-Arah, all those trapped were recovered from the pit following community efforts.

The Thursday incident was the second such calamity in the state in a space of 10 days.

Truthng gathered that on June 3, 20 people died in a mining pit collapse following the heavy rains at the Galkago community in the Shiroro district of Niger State, while efforts were ongoing to rescue 14 others trapped under the rubble. The death toll was confirmed by Niger State Police Command authorities.

The latest incident was said to have involved local miners who were said to be carrying out illegal mining activities.

This incident comes amidst reports that the three top leaders in the state, the governor of Niger State, his deputy, and the speaker of the House of Assembly, were away in Saudi Arabia for Hajj.

Governor Mohammed Umaru, Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba and Speaker Abdulmalik Sarkin-Daji are all in the holy land for the ongoing hajj, leaving the state in the care of the secretary to the state government, Alhaji Abubakar Usman.
