A cross-section of Nigerians has reacted to the plan by the federal government to lift the ban on Twitter.
Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture, on Tuesday said the government would lift the ban on Twitter operations “in a matter of days”.
Mohammed made this known after the week’s virtual Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) at the State House, Abuja.
He disclosed that Twitter has accepted the conditions given to the platform to operate in the country.
Reacting, some Nigerians took to their social media pages saying the plan to lift the ban on Twitter is because of the campaign for the 2023 election.
However, some applauded the government for listening to Nigerians.
@ArinzeChukwu “ Democracy wins over dictatorship! But we tread with caution to know what deal they struck with Tweeter before accepting to lift the ridiculous ban.”
@OgaEbenezer “They need the platform for 2023 campaigns.”
@TTT “So they can use Twitter during the election I guess.”
@OluofManchester “Freedom of speech and expression has been bargained successfully.”
@Meeyam_ “ They want to lift Twitter ban 2nd week of august? Probably because of the campaign, our government don’t do things they won’t benefit from.”
@YahayaWada “Good that Twitter has finally accepted to be guided by Nigeria regulations here.”
@TonyObaje “No, let him not lift the ban please, we are already here via VPN.”
@OgbeniOmisore “The Federal government realising that the little wins they garner on Twitter is already eroded as a result of the infamous ban; now working round the clock to lift the ban.”
@Joe “If it’s true that Twitter agreed to setup office in Nigeria, then we can all agree that Buhari won this round.”
@AngeliMaliaka “ FG saying they would lift the Twitter ban in a matter of days is one of the best news I’ve seen today.”
@Afiaemmanuele “They need Twitter for 2023.”
@Mefoh “ Lai Mohammed says Twitter must have an office in Nigeria, register with NCC before the ban is lifted. Jack if you agree, then you’ve signed and supported the exposure and unlawful abductions of anti-government Nigerian youth.”
@Liquid “ Twitter ban would be lifted soon — Lai Mohammed on the road to 2023.”
