The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede has directed an immediate investigation into weighty bribery allegations made against some officers of the Commission by popular Nigerian social media personality, Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky.
The allegations, which have gained widespread attention after going viral on social media, involved a claim that EFCC officers extorted the sum of N15 million from Okuneye.
In a video circulated by activist Martins Vincent Otse, commonly referred to as VeryDarkMan, Bobrisky alleged that the officers collected N15 million in exchange for dropping charges related to money laundering.
The controversial figure, who had previously been convicted of fraud-related crimes, suggested that the bribe was paid to ensure that the investigation against him did not proceed.
Responding swiftly to the public outcry, Olukoyede ordered the immediate formation of a special investigation team to critically examine the claims.
In his statement, he emphasized that the EFCC was committed to maintaining its integrity and credibility.
He assurred Nigerians that the Commission would leave no stone unturned in determining the truth behind the accusations.
To facilitate a comprehensive investigation, the EFCC has summoned both Okuneye and Otse to its Lagos Directorate, urging them to come forward and provide any information that could assist in unravelling the alleged bribery scheme.
This move signals the seriousness with which the anti-corruption agency is approaching the matter.
The EFCC further reassured the public that the findings of the investigation would be made transparent and publicly disclosed once concluded. “We will conduct a thorough and impartial investigation to ensure justice is served,” said a spokesperson for the Commission.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to upholding its core values of integrity, courage, professionalism, and collaboration. Olukoyede stressed that the EFCC remains unwavering in its mission to fight corruption, even if it involves allegations against its own officers. He noted that the agency would continue to hold its personnel to the highest ethical standards and take action against any proven misconduct.
The case has sparked significant debate and concern on social media, with many Nigerians calling for a swift and decisive resolution. This development comes at a time when public trust in government institutions is under scrutiny, making it a pivotal moment for the EFCC to demonstrate its commitment to accountability.
As the investigation proceeds, all eyes will be on the EFCC to see how it handles this sensitive and high-profile case. Bobrisky’s allegations, given his public persona and wide-reaching influence, have only heightened the stakes for the Commission, making transparency and justice crucial in restoring public confidence.
