Expanding Gas Utilisation In Nigeria: From Policy To Pipelines, By Prof. Kingsley Nwozor

The 14th Nigeria Liquefied Petroleum Gas Association (NLPGA) conference themed “Gas: The Road to Economic Recovery” may have come and gone but the lessons will last for a generation. Held at the prestigious Oriental Hotel in Lagos on November 6-7, 2024, the conference brought together industry experts and thought leaders to explore the vital role of gas in driving Nigeria’s economic growth.

As a Session Speaker, on “GAS Policy – A Tool for Wealth Creation and Employment,” I had the opportunity to brainstorm with fellow Panellists on how well-implemented policies can unlock opportunities, attract investments and foster a resilient national economy.  I am happy that the audience in the capacity-filled room agreed with me that Policy-making was not much of a challenge to Nigeria but that Policy implementation is the big issue.

In my later submission to the Women In Business session, I made a case for a national gas utilisation culture to be evolved through deliberate Gas Literacy initiatives such as Girls-in-Gas programme considering the hefty role women play in domestic gas utilisation. For this gas culture to thrive, we must ensure that Gas is not only available but very affordable.

I seized every moment of the conference to showcase the industrial capabilities, innovative ideas, disruptive breakthroughs and investment opportunities that abound in Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University.

We also made history as we witnessed the transition of NLPGA to Nigeria Liquefied and Compressed Gases Association (NLCGA). I am grateful to my good friend, Felix Ekundayo (the President of NLPGA now NLCGA) and his team for giving me the opportunity to ventilate my Gas ideas. Thank you to all the panellists, participants, organisers and industry stakeholders for engaging in these essential conversations and helping chart the path forward for Nigeria’s gas sector. I look forward to hosting NLCGA someday in Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Anambra State.

Let’s continue to drive conversations that propel Nigeria’s economic growth through sustainable energy solutions. If you attended the conference, I’d love to hear your thoughts and takeaways!
