Sheikh Muhammad Ali Hammadi, a senior commander of Hezbollah, was shot dead in front of his house in eastern Lebanon on Tuesday night.
Unidentified assailants opened fire, shooting him six times, and he died at the scene.
While local reports have ruled out any political motive, the killing is believed to stem from a longstanding family feud.
Hammadi had been on the FBI’s most-wanted list for many years. He became a prominent figure after hijacking a West German plane in 1985, which was carrying 153 passengers.
During the hijacking, he was allegedly involved in torturing and killing an American national.
This incident occurred amid a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon.
In 2023, Hezbollah had joined forces with Hamas in its war against Israel. Israel had also targeted Hezbollah’s supply chains, which led to the explosion of several devices in Syria and Israel.
In retaliation, Israel had eliminated several high-ranking Hezbollah commanders, including Hassan Nasrallah, and had conducted military operations in southern Lebanon prior to the ceasefire.
