The Nigeria Police Force has issued a strong condemnation of the unauthorized use of police uniforms and insignia by a popular social media content creator, Martins Otse, also known as “VDM.”

In a recent video shared across his platforms, Otse appeared dressed in police attire, prompting swift disapproval from the authorities and the launch of an official investigation into the incident.

According to a police statement, the Force had distanced itself from the video, asserting that Otse acted without authorization.

The investigation will focus on identifying the source of the police gear used and determining under what authority, if any, Otse obtained and wore the uniform.

The unauthorized possession or display of police uniforms is a serious offence in Nigeria, with strict penalties outlined in Section 251 of the Criminal Code Law and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law. This regulation underscores the need to protect the integrity and identity of the police force, which is undermined by misuse or imitation.

The Nigeria Police Force emphasized the importance of its symbols, explaining that they are not just items of clothing but represent the responsibility and commitment of those who serve.

“Unauthorized use of police uniforms, insignia, or accoutrements by individuals outside the Force damages public trust and diminishes the professionalism that the uniform represents,” a spokesperson stated.

While the Police Force expressed its support for young Nigerians and their creativity in the content creation industry, it also made it clear that any misuse of police regalia, symbols, or uniforms for entertainment purposes will not be tolerated.

The statement urged content creators to find alternative ways to express their creativity without violating national laws or disrespecting the values upheld by the Force.

The police call on the public to respect the protocols surrounding the use of official symbols and warned that offenders will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

This recent case highlights the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to maintaining the sanctity of its image while also ensuring that all citizens, including popular figures, are held accountable under the law.
