MCO partners DSS to train staff on cyber security

In order to safeguard its online platform against cyber crimes and optimize digital service delivery, The Nigeria Mining Cadastre Office (NMCO) has collaborated with the Department of State Service (DSS) to train members of staff on cyber security.

Head of Press and Public Relations at the MCO, Folashade Fatoke who confirmed the development to our correspondent in a statement on Tuesday, explained that the training, which was held at the Agency’s Conference Room on Tuesday, 26th November, 2024 was essentially on cyber security, noting that cyber safety is very crucial for personal and organizational protection.

The statement said the Director General of the agency, Engr. Obadiah Simon Nkom charged MCO staff to adhere to the “dos and don’ts” of the DSS training.

Engr. Nkom, who said that MCO’s system is web-based, explained that after the launch of the electronic Mining Cadastre Plus (eMC+), it is expected that every user is cautious and careful on their interactions online.

Nkom particularly explained the importance of the agency’s migration from analog to digital cadastre administration, saying that it will promote efficiency and transparency in processing of application for Mineral Title while boosting investment in the mineral sector.

Engr. Nkom was quoted as saying: “I believe you all know that our eMC+ has been online since it was launched in November 2022. We have been receiving a lot of online applications. As such we need to be very careful and be able to identify such tricks as we are being taught today.”

According to him, “everybody is prone to attack and this training is part of our strategy in reforming the office and the need to develop security alertness. We must therefore be committed to ensuring zero tolerance on cybercrimes.”

The key highlight of the training is the Declaration of Oath of Secrecy and Oath of Allegiance undertaken by members of staff to rededicate their loyalty and service delivery to the Nation.

The Director General further explained that undertaking the declaration of Oath of Secrecy and Oath of Allegiance at the training is to lay emphasis on ethics of service, adding that there is need to develop personal set of values which include loyalty, honesty, hard work, accountability and integrity.

He said, “You’re all expected to protect government’s document and this is why we are taking you through this training.”

The interactive training session took participants through protection against threats like, malware, phishing, identity threat and the importance of security document, among others.
