Namibia begins construction of its largest solar power plant

NAMPOWER, Namibia’s state-owned power utility, announced on Monday it has signed a contract with two Chinese firms to construct the country’s largest solar power plant. The project will increase Namibia’s installed power capacity by 100 megawatts, reducing its dependency on electricity imports from neighbouring countries like Zambia and South Africa.

The project, valued at N$1.4bn Namibian dollars (about $78 million), is expected to stabilise electricity tariffs, support economic growth, and promote environmental sustainability. NamPower’s managing director, Kahenge Haulofu, emphasised the plant’s long-term benefits for the country’s energy sector and economy.

The construction will be handled by China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Cooperation Co. Ltd and Chint New Energy Development (Zhejiang) Co. Ltd, with the project set for completion in 18 months. Operations are expected to begin in the second quarter of 2026.

German development bank KfW will fund 80 percent of the project, with NamPower contributing the remainder.
