The National Economic Council (NEC) has deferred its decision on the establishment of state police to January 2025, citing the need for further stakeholder engagement and refinement of proposals.
At its meeting on Thursday, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, NEC said it received an update on the submissions made by states regarding the establishment of state police.
Speaking to State House reporters after the meeting, Governor Sani Uba of Kaduna state said the report presented to the council revealed that the 36 states have submitted their positions on the matter.
The governor noted that only the FCT is yet to make a submission.
NEC resolved to stand down the issue until its January 2025 meeting to allow time for a more comprehensive stakeholder engagement process.
The aim is to fine-tune the submissions and ensure an informed decision is made regarding the framework for state policing.
He said the Permanent Secretary has been directed to continue consultations with stakeholders and develop a roadmap for a robust framework that aligns with the council’s objectives.
