Nigerian Army clarifies involvement in Kano looting incident

The Nigerian Army (NA) has addressed a viral video circulating on social media, which wrongly suggests that troops were involved in looting during a protest on August 1, 2024, in Kano.

In a statement Director of Army Public Relations Major General Onyema Nwachukwu said soldiers from the 3 Brigade NA responded to a distress call regarding an attack on Barakat Stores.

Their swift intervention prevented further looting, as troops intercepted some hoodlums and began recovering stolen items.

He said while returning the recovered goods, the soldiers received another urgent distress call about a potential attack on the Kano State Government House.

Given the gravity of the situation, the troops diverted to protect the Government House.

The video in question was recorded during this urgent response, capturing moments when some hoodlums stole items from the military truck.

The NA explained that the soldiers prioritized preventing the attack on the Government House over minor thefts from their truck.

Nwachukwu said the recovered goods, including gallons of cooking oil, were later returned to Barakat Stores.

The store’s management has expressed appreciation for the troops’ efforts and professionalism in a letter from their General Manager.

He commended the troops for their prompt and professional conduct and emphasized the NA’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property and urged the public to verify information before spreading misinformation.

The NA appreciates the support and cooperation of law-abiding citizens in maintaining peace and safety during this critical time.
