• Condones with families of COVID-19 victims
• Seeks prayers for speedy, permanent recovery of others
In commemoration of Year 2020 Geologists Day, the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS) has called on geologists to stay abreast of developments in the profession as a way of effectively contributing its quota to national development, while encouraging individual and corporate members to embrace and improve innovation.
In his Goodwill Message to the public on Sunday, a copy of which was made available to THE TRUTH, the President of the Society, Engr Obadiah Simon Nkom conveyed the felicitation of NMGS Council to Geologists, charging them to exhibit highest standard of professionalism.
In the Goodwill Message, which was personally signed by the president, he recalled that the day was initiated by Soviet Geologists in 1966, and noted that “the Day’s celebration has become a global event, adding that geologists of all persuasion and their colleagues in the mining industry now use the opportunity afforded by the ‘Geologists Day’ to inform the public of the activities of the noble profession.”
“As we all mark this very important day, I wish you all a happy celebration and in the same vein, urge each and every one of us to stay safe by fully complying with protocols prescribed in order to overcome the pandemic,” he implored.
He lamented the disruption of plans to celebrate the 2020 Geologists Day, saying: “Globally, Year 2020 celebration of the Geologists Day has been somewhat muted by the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic,” while expressing confidence that the world will finally overcome current global health challenge.
Nkom, a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and some other professional bodies is also the Director-General of the Nigeria Mining Cadastre Office.
The president further expressed optimism for an elaborate celebration of the 2021 Geologists Day. He prayed that it be devoid of the current encumbrances that have militated against the celebration of 2020 Geologists Day.
The president further said: “Happy 2020 Geologists Day.”
“On behalf of the Council of the NMGS, I commiserate with the families of the victims of COVID-19 Virus who lost their lives, I pray for the speedy and permanent recovery of those who are currently undergoing treatment,” he said, adding that Council enjoins the nation to continue to pray for their recovery.
