The former director-general of Peter Obi’s presidential campaign, Doyin Okupe, has publicly declared that Bola Tinubu is the most suitable candidate for the presidency. Okupe made this statement on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” program, attributing his decision to Tinubu’s impressive governance record as Lagos State governor from 1999 to 2007.
Okupe’s endorsement of Tinubu comes as a surprise, given his previous role as Obi’s campaign director-general. However, he has since distanced himself from Obi and the Labour Party, citing ideological differences. Okupe’s change of heart follows his conviction for money laundering in December 2022, for which he was sentenced to pay a fine.
With his newfound support for Tinubu, Okupe has effectively abandoned his former allegiance to Obi and the Labour Party. This development highlights the shifting political landscape in Nigeria, as former allies and opponents alike reassess their allegiances and priorities.
