Police detain 2 suspected motorcycle thieves in Jigawa

The Police Command in Jigawa has detained two suspects for allegedly snatching motorcycles in Dutse and Gwaram Local Government Areas (LGAs).

The command’s spokesperson, SP Lawan Shiisu, confirmed their arrests and detention in a statement issued in Dutse on Sunday.

Shiisu said one of the suspects, a resident of Kafin Tugga village in Gwaram LGA, was arrested after stealing a motorcycle on March 5.

“On March 5, 2025, at about 8:20 p.m., Fagam Divisional Police Headquarters received a complaint from one Idris Ya’u, 22, of Gwani village, an okada rider.

“He reported that he had conveyed a passenger from Gwani village to Haya village.

“At a point between the two villages, the passenger asked him to stop under the pretense of answering a phone call.

“In the process, the passenger struck him on the head with a stick, rendering him unconscious, and fled with his Bajaj motorcycle, registered as TRN 704 QL KN,” Shiisu said.

He explained that following a tip-off, officers arrested the suspect on March 12 in possession of the stolen motorcycle. Upon interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime.

In a separate development, Shiisu said that while on routine patrol on Thursday near the Jigawa State Legislative Quarters in Dutse, police officers heard a call for help.

“Upon arrival at the scene, the team found a commercial motorcyclist, Yunusa Suleman, 30, of G-9 Quarters, lying unconscious.

After regaining consciousness, he reported that an unidentified person had stolen his motorcycle,” he said.

Suleman was rushed to the hospital for medical attention, while another police team, in collaboration with vigilantes, cordoned off the area to track down the suspects.

“Fortunately, the 30-year-old suspect of Babaldu town, was arrested while in possession of the stolen motorcycle.

“Investigations revealed that the suspect had hired the victim to take him to the Government House Unity Pentagon Roundabout.

“Upon reaching Dasina Quarters, where his accomplice was hiding, he asked the rider to stop.

“At that moment, the suspect ‘s accomplice who resides in Ningi LGA, Bauchi State, now at large, appeared and struck the victim on the head with a hammer, rendering him unconscious before they fled with the motorcycle,” Shiisu explained.

Further investigations revealed that one Idris Abdulaziz of Jigawar Tsada had also identified Mohammed as the same suspect who robbed him of his Boxer motorcycle near Matrix Filling Station along Ibrahim Aliyu Bypass on March 12.

Shiisu said the suspects would be charged in court upon completion of investigations.
