Police summon NLC President Ajaero for terrorism financing

Joe Ajero

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has summoned the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajero, over alleged terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.

The police summoned the NLC President via a letter dated Monday, August 19, 2024, and signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Adamu Muazu on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Response Team (IRT) in Abuja.

Ajaero was ordered to appear before the IRT for interrogation on Tuesday, August 20, by 10 a.m.

The letter read: “This office is investigating a case of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime in which you have been implicated.

“You are therefore required to report to the undersigned for an interview on Tuesday, 20th August 2024, at 10:00 hrs prompt, at Old Abattoir by Guzape Junction, Abuja, through the Team Leader on telephone no 08035179870, in connection with the above investigation.

“Be informed that if you fail to honour this letter, this office will have no choice but to issue a warrant for your arrest.”

The NLC had called for the “immediate” release of its members arrested by security operatives in Abuja.

The NLC, in a communique issued after its emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Saturday, August 10, alleged that some of its members were arrested after the raid of its national secretariat in the nation’s capital.

The security operatives were reported to have raided the NLC secretariat at the Central Business District in Abuja on August 7.

The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement on August 9, said a suspect was traced to the NLC building, adding that police’s operation in the area had no connection with the union.

However, the NLC condemned the police’s explanation of the alleged invasion, saying the raid was a deliberate provocation by the government.
