Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has removed long-serving Health Minister Ummy Mwalimu in a strategic cabinet reshuffle on Wednesday, signalling efforts to realign her government ahead of the upcoming general elections in 2025. The reshuffle, which is the second in less than a month, underscores President Hassan’s focus on consolidating power and strengthening her administration.
In a statement released by Chief Secretary Moses Kusiluka, it was announced that Jenista Mhagama has been appointed as the new Minister of Health. Mhagama, who previously served as the Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office responsible for Policy, Parliament, and Coordination, takes over from Mwalimu, who has not been assigned a new role.
In addition to the health ministry change, President Hassan appointed renowned law professor Palamagamba Kabudi as the new Minister of Constitution and Legal Affairs, replacing Pindi Chana, who has been reassigned as the Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism—a position she previously held. William Lukuvi has been promoted to Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, where he will oversee policy, parliament, and coordination.
The reshuffle also brought significant changes to the Attorney General’s Office, with senior aviation expert Hamza Johari appointed as the new Attorney General, replacing Eliezer Feleshi, who has been elevated to the position of Judge of the Court of Appeal.
This latest round of cabinet changes reflects President Hassan’s ongoing efforts to solidify her administration and enhance governance as Tanzania continues to address its development challenges. The reshuffle is seen as a strategic move to prepare the government for the upcoming general elections, ensuring that key ministries are led by trusted and capable officials.
