U.S. President Donald Trump has temporarily halted military aid to Ukraine, significantly escalating tensions with Kyiv and pressuring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to engage in peace negotiations with Russia.
A White House official confirmed the decision on Monday, stating that the move aligns with Trump’s broader goal of expediting an end to the ongoing conflict.
A sudden and strategic shift
The suspension of aid follows a dramatic and public confrontation between Trump and Zelensky, underscoring growing friction between the two leaders. Trump, who has long sought a swift resolution to the war, had previously avoided confirming whether military assistance would continue.
However, his latest decision to pause aid immediately impacts hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of weaponry intended for Ukrainian forces, according to reports from The New York Times.
A White House official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, emphasised that the suspension is part of a broader review. “The President has been clear that he is focused on peace. We need our partners to be committed to that goal as well. We are pausing and reviewing our aid to ensure that it is contributing to a solution,” the official said.
Trump’s warning to Zelenskyy
The U.S. president also issued a stark warning to Zelenskyy, criticising his resistance to immediate negotiations with Russia. Speaking at the White House, Trump suggested that the Ukrainian leader should be more appreciative of U.S. support and warned that his position could become increasingly precarious without a ceasefire agreement.
“He won’t be around very long without a deal,” Trump remarked, signaling his growing impatience with Ukraine’s refusal to enter peace talks on Russia’s terms.
Zelenskyy’s response and the call for security guarantees
Despite Trump’s pressure, Zelenskyy reaffirmed Ukraine’s stance that any long-term resolution to the war must include concrete security guarantees. In a video statement on Monday, he stressed that Ukraine’s past vulnerability had emboldened Russia’s aggression.
“It was the lack of security guarantees for Ukraine 11 years ago that allowed Russia to begin its occupation of Crimea and the war in Donbas. The same lack of guarantees enabled the full-scale invasion in 2022,” Zelensky stated.
He also reiterated that a durable peace agreement remains distant, adding, “An agreement on ending the war is very, very far away.” His remarks reportedly irritated Trump, who has been pushing for swift negotiations.
Growing international concerns
The White House’s decision to pause aid has alarmed key U.S. allies. In response, Britain and France have initiated discussions on a potential one-month truce, which could include a ceasefire enforced through air, sea, and energy infrastructure protections. European leaders remain cautious about Trump’s shift in approach, fearing it may signal a broader U.S. pivot toward Russia.
German opposition leader Friedrich Merz suggested that Trump’s confrontation with Zelensky was a “deliberate escalation,” raising concerns about Washington’s long-term commitment to Ukraine’s defense.
Meanwhile, Moscow has seized on the internal rift between the U.S. and Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov accused Zelensky of lacking diplomatic skills and asserted that Ukraine’s leader had no genuine interest in pursuing peace. “He doesn’t want peace,” Peskov claimed.
Continued conflict on the ground
Even as diplomatic tensions rise, the war continues to take a devastating toll. Ukrainian officials reported a deadly Russian missile strike on a military training facility over the weekend, located approximately 130 kilometers (80 miles) from the front lines.
A respected military blogger estimated that between 30 and 40 Ukrainian soldiers were killed, with at least 90 more wounded in the attack near Dnipro.
Political fallout and uncertain future
Trump has previously criticised Zelenskyy’s leadership, labeling him a “dictator” for postponing elections due to martial law. The Ukrainian president has dismissed calls for his resignation, maintaining that he will only step down if Ukraine secures NATO membership—a prospect both Russia and, now, Trump oppose.
