US commends Ruto for easing tensions amid Kenya protests

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed gratitude to Kenyan President William Ruto in a phone call on Wednesday for his efforts to de-escalate tensions in Kenya. The country has been rocked by widespread protests over a controversial tax bill, resulting in over 20 fatalities.

In a statement, the State Department reported, ‘The Secretary thanked President Ruto for taking steps to reduce tensions and pledging to engage in dialogue with the protestors and civil society.’ Blinken emphasised the importance of security forces exercising restraint and avoiding violence, and he urged swift investigations into allegations of human rights abuses.

Blinken also welcomed Ruto’s commitment to uphold the constitutionally-endowed rights of Kenyans, including peaceful assembly and due process for detainees.

Ruto’s decision to withdraw the contentious tax bill has been seen as a significant move to address public outcry. The bill had sparked nationwide demonstrations, leading to clashes between protesters and security forces. Ruto’s pledge to engage in dialogue with the protesters and civil society is viewed as a step toward addressing the grievances of the Kenyan populace.
