World Geologists Day: Message of the Geological Society of Nigeria to Geoscientitsts

In commemoration of Year 2025 World Geologists Day (April 6th), the Geological Society of Nigeria (GSN) has emphasised the importance of preserving the earth while working with other professionals to ensure that mining of natural resources with which Nigeria is greatly endowed, is done in line with global best practices.

A statement from the Society on Sunday, signed by its President and co-founder, Mr. Uba Saidu Malami stated: “On this remarkable occasion of World Geologists Day, the Geological Society of Nigeria (GSN) celebrates the remarkable contributions of geologists to understanding and preserving the Earth. From exploring the planet’s deep past to addressing present-day challenges such as climate change, water security, environmental sustainability, infrastructure development, and natural hazard mitigation, geologists are at the forefront of shaping a safer and more informed society.”

“Today, we salute their tireless efforts in applying Earth science for the benefit of humanity.”

“As Nigeria navigates complex development priorities, the GSN calls for renewed investment in geoscience education, research, and capacity building. Geologists remain indispensable to national growth – not only in resource development but also in managing urbanization, guiding resilient infrastructure, and informing disaster risk reduction.”

“On this special day, we reaffirm our commitment to advancing geoscientific excellence and inspiring a new generation of geologists to safeguard our future.”
